Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the British Isles, the summit rises to 1,345 metres above sea level. Ben Nevis stands in the Lochaber area of the Scottish Highlands, close to the town of Fort William, where we will enjoy our three night stay surrounded by the natural beauty of the Grampian Mountains. The summit is the highest land in any direction for 459 miles. Translated as the “Venomous mountain” or “mountain with its head in the clouds” this is going to be a great Atlas Challenge.
Ben Nevis Climb*
We take the Mountain Track to the summit, also known as the ‘pony track’ or ‘Ben Path’ up with an approx. climb and descent time of 9 hours so please ensure you are attuned to mountain walking. A kit list will be provided.
The Jacobite Steam Railway Experience
‘Described as the greatest railway journey in the world, this 84 mile round trip takes you past a list of impressive extremes. Starting near the highest mountain in Britain, Ben Nevis, it visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station, Arisaig; passes close by the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, Loch Morar and the shortest river in Britain, River Morar, finally arriving next to the deepest seawater loch in Europe, Loch Nevis!
The train stops en route to Mallaig at the village of Glenfinnan, where we dismount for an hour and a half to wander the village. You can take a picnic on board and there is a bar to purchase drinks.
The Ben Nevis Region is renowned also for its whisky so no visit to Fort William is complete without some serious whisky tasting. So let’s raise a dram or two to celebrate our Ben Nevis climb.
The West Highland Museum
The museum tells the story of the region and its history with its most renowned and unusual collection relating to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Cause.
Make sure you locate the secret portrait …’Now you see me now you don’t’!
