I quote “Meteora looks like a place made not by man, but by a higher power that parted the skies and placed a few buildings on top of columns of rock”.

These monasteries in northern Greece were the work of hermit monks who scaled cliff faces to their building sites. To them Meteora’s inaccessibility was an asset, a place of retreat from ‘the bloody incursions of the Ottoman empire, and offering a lofty seclusion that quite literally brought them closer to God’. These days the cliff faces are dotted with rock climbers and there are a variety of walks leading to some of the monasteries.

Our tour offers you the opportunity to discover the rocky pinnacles and cliff-top monasteries of the Meteora and the spell-binding mountain landscapes of the Pindos National Park.

Marvel at the audacity of the Meteora monks who dared to perch monasteries on tiny summits. Sublime walks explore these unique and mystical monasteries built between the 14th and 16th centuries.

Follow pristine hiking trails through the unspoilt Zagori region of Greece which incorporates the Pindos Mountains and the impressive Vikos Gorge. Delight in following routes between traditional stone villages, crossing ancient bridges and in the delicious local cuisine at day’s end.

Day 1 We arrive at Thessaloniki airport where transport takes us to Kalabaka located underneath the impressive Meteora rocks. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this area has unusual and spectacular landscapes of immense monolithic pillars and hills like huge rounded boulders.

Day 2  & Day 3 We will enjoy walks with local guides to the Great Meteoras and Monasteries. These guides have a wonderful knowledge of these historic monuments so ask them lots of questions. Take in the amazing scenery. Enjoy entering the museum for a small charge and the superb views.

Day 4: Transfer to Zagori and the Pindos Mountains.  Here we will be staying in the village of Vitsa, located at the edge of the Vikos Gorge for 3 nights. Arriving for lunch we will then enjoy an afternoon walk over the Old Bridges and in the Villages of Zagori.

Day 5 Tsepelovo to Kapesovo  Starting from Tsepelovo  the trail today follows old kalderimia (old cobbled mule trail) and across the plains of Vradeto to the highest village in the area. After a visit to Beloi, a viewpoint into the gorge walk to the Vradeto and down its impressive steps to Kapesovo. Return to Vitsa.

Day 6: Walking the Vikos Gorge Starting from Monodendri we are ready to begin our crossing of the impressive Vikos Gorge and one of the very deepest in the world. Today’s hike is a challenging, all-day hike, but well-worth the effort as you will walk next to a small river and right into the heart of the Pindos National Park. You may spot birds of prey and even wild boars so have your cameras ready.

Day 7 We return to Thessaloniki with a FREE Day to explore. Staying overnight in Thessaloniki we all meet for a farewell dinner at the end of the day.

Experience & Fitness

This tour is graded moderate to strenuous overall. However in the Meteora region the walks are more towards the moderate side. The walks are more challenging in the Pindos Mountains. The trails are a combination of dirt trails, gravel tracks, country roads and cobbled mule paths. This tour is suitable for experienced walkers with very good physical fitness.
