Meet our Guides
I feel very strong about using local guides from the countries we visit as I believe they offer to you the love and passion they have for their country. Local guides enhance your tour as they have the knowledge and experience to ensure you see the best sights plus they often take us ‘off piste’ to walks and pathways hardly trodden by other visitors.
It is also part of my commitment to support, wherever possible the economy of the village, town and/or country we visit. I want to ensure that the guides and all the team we use are paid fairly and treated respectfully. People are very important to me: as in my guests, my team and everyone involved. Happy people make happy tours and that is simple.
So here are a few of our guides saying hello:
Carlos our friendly Madeiran Guide.
Fluent in English and passionate about his country. Carlos led our first walking tour in March 2018 and enthralled us with the variety of walks and his knowledge of nature. He is great fun to be around and very motivational.
“Carlos is extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of walking on Madeira. He very carefully thought about the best walks to put on for our group, so that we saw all aspects of walking on Madeira – from Levada walks, with magnificent views to stunning high level mountain walks. A day with Carlos, as your guide, will leave you exhilarated by the end of the day and wanting to come back for more walking the next day.” Harry Hazlehurst regular on our holidays and a member of the LDWA (Long Distance Walkers Association)
Rachid our Moroccan Guide
Rachid is a highly experienced specialist Atlas mountain and Sahara desert guide but also loves to offer coastal walks. He is fun and friendly and happy to tie a few shashes to keep off the Moroccan sun.
“Rachid is the most excellent guide. His English is impeccable. He was quietly and politely attentive to what we wanted to do and nothing was ever too much trouble for him. He always looked after every member of the party, assessing our capabilities and adapting accordingly. June Maw a member of LDWA and Outdoor Duo Walking Club.
Sara our Lanzarote guide
Sara has a deep passion in her tours to increase people´s awareness of the environmental, historic, social and cultural patrimony of Lanzarote. She aims to achieve this by commenting and interpreting along her trekking tours throughout the volcanic parks. Sara says “By getting to know our environment we learn about it and also learn to value it, love it and protect it”.
“Friendly, bubbly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide who immediately felt like a good friend” Darrel Helas a fellow walker on the December 2017 Walking Festival where I first met Sara. Since then she led tours on our Wellbeing’ Laze around in Lanzarote – No Chance’Tour!
Anja and Raphael our Chamonix Guides
Who led us through an amazing tour around Mont Blanc in September 2019 walking in France, Italy and Switzerland.
Anja and Raphael’s Review
“The Tour guides I thought were excellent. They had first hand knowledge of the area where the walks were to take place and led them at a pace which enabled the slowest walker to keep up.They were very friendly, spoke good English, communicated well and blended into the group with their easy going personalities. I would certainly recommend them to other groups” Chris Holt Member of the Ramblers Association, UK
Nikos our Greek Guide
Nikos acted as our trekking guide when we visited the Northern Pindos National Park, Zagori, Konitsa and the Vikos Gorge. As a local man he was familiar with the animals, flowers and herbs, and historical landscape of the Pindos. Nikos was always helpful and good natured, and made sure we enjoyed the best of our holiday. I’m pleased we have Nikos again on our return trip when we tackle the Gorge crossing! Dean our Croatian Guide (Right)
We met Dean on our October 2019 Croatia Tour. He led us on various tours throughout Opatija and organised a wide range of visits to Lake Bled in Slovenia and to the Plitvice National Park alongside other local guides as in the custom in this area. With his history degree he offered amazing knowledge of both the recent war with the division of the former Yugoslavia but also right back to the Roman times.
Review “More culture than walking, but a totally fabulous cultural experience about geopolitics gained through the guides – topped off with beautiful scenery. It’s opened a whole new world for me in terms of new countries to explore and a thirst for historical knowledge” Gail Jenson
Nel our Bulgarian Guide
Nel has been highly recommended as our Bulgaria Guide by a regular walking guest on Atlas Tours. He sent me this review. “I met Nellie last January on a tour and found her a charming guide who looked after us well. We were able to experience some of the local food and culture. Bulgaria is a beautiful country and tourism is only just starting so it was a good time to go before it becomes popular which can often spoil the nature”. Certainly where we are staying in the Rodopi Mountains we’ll enjoy quiet off the road beaten tracks.
